VINTAGE 1970 MARTIN SIGMA GCS-7 / GCR-7 GUITAR ONE OF THE FIRST ONES EVER MADE - ZERO / ZEROTH FRET This is one of the rarest Sigma guitars I have ever seen! The 'GCS' or 'Grand Concert Series' are hard to find, let alone a '7' grade, which is the highest grade. This guitar is a 'GCS' with a zero fret, and it is marked 'GCR-7' for Grand Concert Rosewood, highest grade; instead of the typical 'GCS-7.' Dreadnought models DM-5 and DR-7 are the most common early Sigma guitars until the late '70s (D for Dreadnought, R for Rosewood, M for Mahogany, and the number denoting the grade, 7 being the top grade instrument.) So a 'GCS-7' or 'GCR-7' is a Grand Concert size, Rosewood back and sides, highest grade. The zero fret guitars were the very first guitars that Sigma ever produced, and I have NEVER seen an early Grand Concert sized Sigma with a zero fret. Martin created the Sigma line of guitars in 1970 to compete with the increasing number of imported guitars from Japan and elsewhere. ![]() Japan was known to have an abundance of seasoned hardwood and their labor was less expensive. The Sigma line was discontinued in 2007. Initial construction was in Japan from 1970 through 1984. The Sigma guitars made in Japan from 1970 through 1979 can be distinguished by a headstock logo consisting of the single word SIGMA surmounted with the Σ symbol (the Greek letter sigma), in Mother of Pearl. The sigma symbol is often described as a 'sideways M.' While playing a Sigma guitar the 'sideways M' becomes 'right side up' which appears as the 'M' for Martin. The serial number is an early 4 digit number: 7630. The issue of whether or not Sigma guitars are solid wood or laminate has been a source of controversy and confusion. The answer to the question: 'Are Sigma guitars solid wood or laminate?' Is best answered: 'That depends on the year and model.' The very first Sigma guitars were made of solid wood. Later Sigma guitars, i.e., Second Generation, had laminate wood for the back and sides, with the exception of several models such as the D-10 Anniversary guitar which is also solid wood and only 100 were produced. (I own an Anniversary model as well.) And the solid spruce top of this guitar has aged to a beautiful golden color. Pictures do not do it justice. So, this guitar is one of the very first Sigmas produced, which would mean it was made in 1970 and is solid wood of the highest grade. This guitar is in amazing condition considering it's over 40 years old. There are a few scrapes and dings here and there, mostly on the front, but not too bad. And there is no crazing in the finish. It is completely original and has been cared for very well. It has never even had strap-pins or an end-pin put in it! But, I have way too many guitars and another one on the way, and this guitar deserves to be played. It is currently set-up with Elixir extra-lights with Nanoweb coating. The action is pretty low (3/16' at the 12th fret.) The nut width is 1 11/16,' and the string spread is about 2' across the bridge. It will come in a newer TKL locking hard case with keys, and the case fits it perfectly. It has a nice, straight neck and stays in tune well. It's a very solid guitar that plays great! It is a 14-fret (14 frets clear of the body), has a solid spruce top, Rosewood back and sides, tri-layered white/black/white binding on back and sides, Rosewood fingerboard, adjustable rosewood bridge, and gloss lacquer finish. The original tags are even included! The following dimensions are approximate: 1 11/16' Nut Width 11 3//8' Upper Bout 9 7/8' Waist 15 1/4' Lower Bout 3 7/8' Depth 19 1/4' Body Length 40' Overall This is a guitar to be played and treasured, and should continue to increase in value.
