The two groups came up with what can only be described as horrible lyrics and it made the song unlistenable. I also remember watching Rockstar INXS where they gave two groups a piece of music and told them to write lyrics for it. Having just finished watching Get Back, it was interesting seeing and hearing the progression of the song through different lyrical arrangements. If you ever listen to the same piece of music with two different sets of lyrics, you will realise this is not true. NIN's a bit unique in this respect because dude clearly worked hard on the music as well but in most cases the meaning of the lyrics finish the songs.Īnd then there are some artists where the lyrics would probably be left out if they knew it would still make top-40, like almost any mumble-rap artist these days. There are some where the lyrics are pretty much artist-defining, like Linkin Park, Evanescence, Eminem (any many other rap artists, particularly from the G-Funk era), and Nine Inch Nails. (He may be a piece of shit in real life but his lyrics could get entertaining. (To be fair, there's a non-zero chance Hetfield would say the same.) I'd have a hard time separating the music from Brian Warner's lyrics. I haven't asked James Keenan personally but I doubt he's gonna say "the lyrics are meaningless". There are some bands where they clearly want you to focus on the music but the lyrics clearly have meaning to them, like Tool and, bless them, Marilyn Manson. There are some artists where the lyrics are not completely useless but the music is still pretty much front and center, like Nightwish, KMFDM, or possibly Avenged Sevenfold?
Hetfield may take offense but I, personally, am not listening to Metallica for commentary on what it means to be human. Some are iconic, like One, but they're clearly in it for the riffs.
I don't think you'll find any grand wisdom in Metallica's songs. There are some songs/artists where the lyrics are very much secondary. I saw the arc of the story flow with the arc of the music and it just created an entirely new experience for me! The song just felt so much heavier and realer. I listened to the lyrics and saw how they tell the story of JGHG. THE ENTIRE BOOK IS YOU TRAPPED WITH HIM IN HIS HEAD! It's gruesome.Īfter I read the book I recognized some of the lines in the book as appearing in the song. The entire book is in this soldier's head - he can't communicate or move and everyone thinks he's a braindead vegetable. But then I learned that it was based off the book Johnny Got His Gun where a WW1 soldier has his arms, legs, and face blown off by a landmine. That song has ALWAYS rocked since I was a tiny kid, even when I would just mumble the lyric part while headbanging. Often learning the lyrics of the song and a bit of the history about the band while they were making the song makes me appreciate the song much more as a whole.
